Do I need paver sealing?
We’re asked this question often at Diamond Power Washing & Maintenance: Do I really need to seal my pavers?
The short answer is that it’s an optional treatment, but it’s highly recommended by outdoor maintenance professionals. Paver sealing offers many benefits for extending the lifetime and improving the look of your paver stones.
What are the benefits of paver sealing?
Paver sealing is the best way to keep your patio or deck looking brand new for as long as possible. The process of “sealing” creates an invisible layer between your perfect pavers and the outside world. In other words, the sealant keeps out water, dirt, oil, and any other grime that comes along with an outdoor area.
More benefits of paver sealing include:
- Easier cleaning and stain prevention
- Prevention of weeds and grass growing between stones
- Less shifting or sinking of paver stones
- A lovely, just-installed look for years to come!
What happens if I don’t seal my pavers?
If you skip a sealing treatment, you’re not going to ruin your deck or patio. However, letting your paver stones fall into disrepair is a quick road to unsightly stains and weeds.
Because pavers are installed on top of a sand base, it’s easy for weeds and other vegetation to grow in the spaces between the stones. This is especially true for backyard spaces or homes in places with high humidity–in other words, Jacksonville, Florida! Unsealed pavers are more likely to pick up nasty stains, shift or sink because of structural integrity issues, or collect white film across the surface.
How often should I seal pavers?
You should have your patio or deck re-sealed at least once a year, but if you live in an area that’s plagued by weeds and humidity, it’s a good idea to bump that up to every six months. If you’re not sure when you last had your pavers sealed, give us a call! Our paver sealing experts will be happy to take a look at your current situation and make a recommendation.
Can’t I just do it myself?
You can do anything you set your mind to! However, like most forms of outdoor maintenance, paver sealing should be left to the professionals. Trying to save a few bucks by sealing pavers yourself can lead to costly mistakes and a lot of frustration. Plus, the up-front costs of paver sealing add up faster than you might think (the sealer itself, renting a pressure washer, buying new sand, and spending hours doing the work when you could have your feet up in front of the TV).
